About TCS

Voices That Make a Difference

The Thomas Circle Singers is a chamber choral ensemble with a dual mission: to perform diverse choral works for the enjoyment of audiences in the Washington, D.C. area and to raise awareness and funds for organizations that address the pressing needs of the city’s underserved citizens. Since 1976, TCS has filled this unique niche, enriching the quality of life for Washington area residents by offering superb performances of choral classics and new works by living composers, while contributing to the life of the community by donating concert proceeds to DC-based social service organizations.

For over three decades, TCS concerts have raised funds and awareness for organizations serving the homeless and hungry, children, seniors and families at risk, the sick, and victims of violence in Washington, DC. We donate concert ticket proceeds to nonprofit organizations every year and have raised $100,000 for causes in the last six years. Recent concert beneficiaries include Life Pieces to Masterpieces, WVSA arts connection, Green Door, Transitional Housing Corporation, Community Family Life Services, For Love of Children, Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, and many more.

The chorus has been hailed by The Washington Post for its “glowing performance,” noting “Artistic Director James Kreger has his 32-person ensemble singing weightlessly and with agility. Soft singing is much more difficult to sustain than loud, but pitch never wavered and long phrases emerged sounding fresh and easy.”  In recognition of its numerous achievements and its commitment to staying “in tune” with the community, TCS was named Washingtonian of the Year 2000 by Washingtonian Magazine, and artistic director James Kreger was honored with WETA-FM’s Hometown Hero award.

TCS presents acclaimed performances of diverse choral literature, spanning the Renaissance to contemporary repertoires. Recent concert seasons have included Gerald Finzi’s In Terra Pax, Irving Fine’s “The Choral New Yorker,” Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, the North American premiere of Bob Chilcott’s “Canticles of Light,” and the world premier of Daniel Gawthrop’s “The Bond of Charity,” commissioned by TCS to celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary season. Other recent commissions include the world premieres of Robert Convery’s “Glory to the Child,” and “A Heart in Hiding (The Passionate Love Poems of Emily Dickenson)” by award-winning composer Gwyneth Walker.

Thomas Circle Singers is a member of Chorus America, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

Each concert promises to captivate the ear, stimulate the mind, and restore the soul. If you haven't heard TCS recently, do so this year!
