DESCRIPTION:Love leaves echoes across time and memory. Our opening program explores love in its many forms\, romantic\, spiritual\, and familial\, through music by Gwyneth Walker\, Samuel Barber\, Thomas LaVoy\, Joanna Marsh\, and others. Walker’s lush A Heart in Hiding\, a 2006 TCS commission setting the poetry of Emily Dickinson\, captures love’s exhilaration and mystery\, while Barber’s beloved The Coolin offers a timeless invitation between lovers. Joanna Marsh’s powerful Everlasting Covenant expands the theme outward\, pairing Dickinson’s reverence for the natural world with the prophet Isaiah’s warning against its destruction. Rhythmic settings by Tamsin Jones and Iain Farrington echo older musical styles\, Michael Fili’s A Carol from Flanders recalls the humanity of the Christmas Truce of 1914\, and Kevin Siegfried’s luminous cantata Vidimus Stellam traces the theme of light from Advent through Epiphany in a brilliant collaboration for choir and brass.
