Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music, David Lang’s poignant little match girl passion retells Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale. A musical “passion” typically relates and comments on the story of Christ’s suffering and death. Drawing inspiration from this tradition, and especially from J.S. Bach’s renowned St. Matthew Passion, Lang creates a new, intertextual work—a secular passion setting for today’s audiences.
